Middle School Breakfast Program
Once again the Middle School will not be offering a Breakfast Program for students in grades 6, 7 and 8 due to low participation in the 1995-96 school year. State and Federal regulations require the district to receive an exemption each school year from the School Breakfast Program before it can be dropped. The district intends to seek that exemption again. Members of the community who have comments on this should contact the Superintendent at 839-6311. |
The Academic Awards Banquet will now be held on May 21st, 2012, at Hart's Hill Inn at 6:00 PM. |

The Raptor Project
The elementary school was fortunate to have The Raptor Project visit their school recently. Mr. Jonathan Wood brought a collection of hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls from around the world to entertain and educate our students. |
|
On Tuesday, May 4, the elementary school started the day off by exercising on the track as part of Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously). This was the third year our school participated in this project which is organized by Mrs. Kidder and Mr. Smith our physical education teachers. You can view pictures of our children (and staff) exercising by following this link. If you have a shutterfly account, you can order prints directly through your account. ![]() |

Library Brown Bag Lunch and Learn series coming in May. WHAT'S NEW & NOTEWORTHY IN THE LIBRARY The library's extensive biography collection helped 11th grade ELA students research a famous person's life and write a letter from their point of view. Mrs. Willson's 10th grade ELA students used the library's online databases to research and write about the life of Edgar Allan Poe. Ms. Reilly-Stewart used one of the library's new Flip video cameras to capture her French students language skills. Senior government students spent several days in the library's computer lab with Mr. Downs researching presidential candidates, political parties, campaigns and elections. Chemistry experiments in the library? Yep! Mr. Pierno's chemistry classes closeted themselves in the library's copier room, where there are no windows, to see the "glowing" results of their chemical combinations. Lastly, Mrs. Babbie helped many senior humanities students use the library's books and databases to find resources for their term papers, as well as helped demystify the MLA style of bibliographic citation.

The students at Sauquoit Valley Elementary school are voracious readers! So far this year, they have checked out 15,500 books from our library. Many of the classics that parents and grandparents grew up on are getting a fresh look. For example, The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series have come out in a graphic novel format. For those not familiar, a graphic novel is a book that looks similar to a comic. These books have a shelf life of only minutes! This means once they are put back on the shelf, another child checks it out immediately.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie has generated a lot of requests for this series of books in our library. We own 12 copies (3 each of the four titles in the series) and they are never on the shelf. Children have learned the vaulable skill of how to reserve a book with the hopes of getting their hands on this year's hottest title before the school year runs out.

![]() In library class, Mr. Hildreth read the story of Rechenka's Eggs, by Patricia Polacco, to the second graders. In this story, an injured goose that is rescued breaks the many precious eggs the grandma took weeks to decorate. A miracle then replaces the broken eggs, and the grandma is left with one very special egg at the end of the story.

Congratulations To All Winter Athletes Congratulations to the Sauquoit Valley Winter Athletes on a very successful year, athletically and academically.
Specifically, our Boys and Girls Volleyball teams played very well in sectional play. The teams highlighted their season with incredible records as they prepared to go for Section titles.
The Girls team started with a win over Little Falls followed by a heartbreaking loss to Faith Heritage 3-2, in the Section Semi-Final.
The Boys team ended their regular season with a loss to a very strong Little Falls team. This loss set up a re-match in the first round of the Sectionals. Sauquoit Valley emerged from this contest with a 3-2 win.
The next game - for the Section Crown - was with a solid Mt. Markham team that beat Sauquoit Valley twice during the regular season. Sauquoit Valley won this game with a 3-2 score, and momentum for the Regional competition.
The final game for the Boys was for the Regional title game versus Maple Hill. The goal to win a Section and Region title was realized as Sauquoit Valley won 3-1.
As one season ends, another begins. The question is, "Which spring sport teams will continue the success"?
Congratulations to all the Winter Sports Teams! Athletic Department

Central School
District
Health Information
H1N1 Follow-up Clinic (students 9 and under needing the second dose of vaccine and anyone interested in receiving first time vaccine)
Dear Parent/Guardian:
During the past three months, the Oneida County Health Department has visited area school districts to provide H1N1 influenza vaccine to school children whose parents signed consent forms. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that children nine (9) years of age and younger receive a second dose of H1N1 influenza vaccine to insure high protection against the H1N1 virus. (It is normal for children receiving any new 'flu vaccine' who are 9 years of age or younger to receive a second dose to insure high levels of immunity.)
As a community service, we will be offering free H1N1 vaccine second doses in your school district in the coming weeks, at no charge. Due to the young age of the children and the requests of some parents to be present, we are scheduling a date(s)/time per district at a centralized district location to permit parents to bring their children in for their second dose of this H1N1 vaccine, after school hours. Whether your child received their first dose at their school, at a local clinic or at their healthcare provider, you may take advantage of this free community service at your district's school site. You must pre-register to schedule your child's appointment so that you will have minimal wait times. We schedule in 15 minute time blocks.
There are two ways to schedule your child's appointment for their second H1N1 vaccine dose and complete your child's second dose consent forms:
(Note: We ask if you have internet access that you use the online method to avoid telephone congestion.) If your child had their vaccine at school for H1N1 Dose # 1, you will still need to pre-register and complete a new consent form, but we will have your first dose consent form available for reference on your school district's clinic date.
1. Use our online vaccine appointment scheduling service. Go to www.ocgov.net and Click on the Quick Link for SCHEDULE YOUR FLU SHOT on the left side, register, and then schedule your appointment for your school's clinic date. You may schedule up to ten (10) family members at this time. If you did not choose to have your family member vaccinated for H1N1 the first time around, you may schedule their first dose at this time, as long as you pre-register for an appointment. Once your date and time are confirmed, please return to the home page and print off a separate consent form for each member of your family who will receive vaccine at this school clinic. They can be found in the Quick Link H1N1 Vaccine Information section of the Home Page. Complete the form and bring it with you to your scheduled School Vaccine clinic appointment. Vaccine information sheets are also available in that section.
2. If you do not have internet access, you may call us at (315) 798-5747 and request assistance in scheduling a School Clinic appointment. Give our staff the date, school district clinic location, and time you would like to attend, and they will schedule the appointment for you. Plan to come to the clinic 5 minutes ahead of your scheduled time so that you may complete the consent forms at your school location prior to getting into the clinic registration line. We will have the consent forms available for you to complete for each family member at that time.
The deadline for pre-registering for your school district's H1N1 vaccine clinic date is March 3, 2010 . If you miss your deadline, we cannot accept late appointments in the registration system. However, you may come into the clinic during the last scheduled 30 minute time period and we will attempt to accommodate your family once all persons with scheduled appointments have received their H1N1 vaccine. If you are not available on your district's schedule date, you may register for any other public open clinic that we offer to receive your second H1N1 vaccine dose by checking the public clinic schedule and completing the same registration process to obtain an appointment.
Schedule Date of Second Clinic
District: Sauquoit Valley Date of Clinic: March 11, 2010 Time: 3:15 - 6:15 p.m . Location: Elementary School
Sincerely,
Ronald Wheelock Superintendent
