The Elementary Band is a performing ensemble made up of fifth grade students.  In Elemetary Band, fundamentals of music and instrumental playing are taught.  Students also learn about proper ensemble practices as well as discipline, responsibilty and teamwork.  Elementary Band provides the foundation for the students' playing careers.  Please read through the attached Elementary Band Handbook for all necessary information about the ensemble.

The April Lesson Schedule is up!

Check out the lesson schedule and feel free to print out practice cards!

Here is a checklist of what is needed for band:

  • Your instrument: If you don't own one, has an intrument been rented?  If not, then one needs to be ASAP.  Here is some contact info for John Keal Music (where you rent from is your decision but the majority of students go through John Keal).

John Keal Music: phone#-(518)482-4405/website- www.johnkealmusic.com

  • Your lesson book (Essential Elements 2000 Book 1)-  Your instrument you are playing will be on the cover so you know which book to buy.  John Keal Music will happily sell you the book but here are some local places you can purchase the book and other music supplies including instrument reeds, valve oil, etc. You could also just order the book off Amazon.com if you like.  Attached at the bottom is a link to show you what the book looks like.

Valley Music: phone#-724-1199

Big Apple Music: phone#- 732-4162/website- www.bigapplemusic.com

  • Instrument Supplies- This differs between instruments:

Oboes- I suggest getting a brand name of Gower or Renard double reed, medium soft.

Clarinets/saxophones- you will need at least 3 good reeds at all times.  I suggest a reed brand called Rico and a strength of 3.  Ask for "Rico 3's".

Brass- be sure you have valve/slide oil.

Percussion- Have at least 2 pair of drumsticks.  One pair in your locker and the other at home.

  • Pencils and a band notebook.  Before we play as an ensemble we will be doing a lot of music intruction and you will need a notebook.  Pencils not pens, we will be writing on music and being able to erase will be important.
