We provide students in every grade level with access to activities related to career pursuit and exploration!

PLANS FOR THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR

Elementary School

• Teachers will support students to complete individual career plans aligned with the templates provided by the State Education Department.
• Grade level teams will continue to collaborate to incorporate content related to careers into their lessons.
• Representatives from the School and Business Alliance will implement lessons on some of the Power Skills.

Middle School

• Counselors will support students to complete individual career plans aligned with the templates provided by the State Education Department.
• Students in grades 5 and 7 will complete the Career Cruising interest inventory which will give them information about potential career interests, and counselors will review this information with students in their individual meetings with them.
• Representatives from the School and Business Alliance will implement lessons on some of the Power Skills.  Specifically: 5th graders will engage in lessons on self-awareness and self-management.  6th graders will engage in lessons on communication and collaboration.  7th graders will engage in lessons on perseverance, problem solving, and adaptability.  8th graders will engage in lessons on professionalism, integrity, and initiative.
• Students will attend career-based field trips.  Specifically: 5th graders will visit the Energy Zone at the Utica Zoo, and 7th and 8th graders will take a tour of the Griffiss Institute.
• The return of the Middle School Career Day! (Tentatively scheduled for March 2025)

High School

• Counselors will support students to complete individual career plans in an online format.
• Lessons on the Power Skills will be incorporated into the Freshmen Seminar course which is required for all 9th graders.
• Students in grades 9 and 11 will complete the Career Cruising interest inventory which will give them information about potential career interests, and counselors will review this information with students in their individual meetings with them.
• 10th and 11th grade students will be able to attend a field trip to visit various colleges.
• Students in grades 10 through 12 will be able to attend various career-related field trips, including a manufacturing field trip (through MVCC) and a business field trip.  For the business trip, students will be able to identify a preferred business to visit.
• 11th and 12th grade students will have the opportunity to identify a preferred career field and engage in a day-long field trip to shadow someone in that field.
• Students who participate in career shadowing experiences (explained in the bullet above) will have the opportunity to engage in week-long internships in their chosen fields (depending on the availability of professionals in the field).

Each school in our district has a multi-tiered system of supports and interventions that seeks to address the needs of each of our students.

A primary component of this system is high-quality, researched-based instruction in our general education classrooms.  Students who are need of additional supports and/or interventions, as evidenced by screening or other assessment indicators, are provided with targeted interventions that match their unique needs.  One of our academic interventions is Academic Intervention Services (AIS) which is provided to students who demonstrate a need for additional academic support as evidenced by state and/or local assessment data.  Parents are kept abreast of the interventions that their child is receiving.  Our Teacher Support Team (TST) and Student Resource Team (SRT) provide critical analysis and input on the intervention decision-making process.

We encourage any parent who is concerned about their child's progress to not hesitate to contact the child's teacher(s).

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS FOR 2024-2025

• Elementary School: Implementation of and reflection on the CKLA reading curriculum and the Walk to Read intervention-for-all program
• Middle School: Consideration of grading practices as outlined in Grading for Equity and continued work on team-based goals
• High School: Goals as outlined in the Plan for Excellence

Our district professional development committee meets periodically to provide input on the development, implementation, and evaluation of professional development activities in our district.  The committee also periodically reviews our professional development plan.

We provide all students with instruction and related programming on the social/emotional competencies of self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship development, and social awareness.  This is instruction, which is aligned with the NYS Education Department Social and Emotional Learning Benchmarks,  is provided by our counselors and social workers.
